Frankfurt am Main
Located in the mid-west of Germany, it is the largest city in the state of Hesse and the central city of the Rhine-Main region. The city area, including 32 merged towns and villages, is 249 km2 and has a population of 652,000 (1995). With the Taunus Mountains at its back, it occupies the southern end of the fertile Wetterau lowland, enjoys a mild climate, and is a transport crossroads in Europe, with the Main River flowing into the Rhine. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a key political, economic, and cultural center, and is still famous today as an international commercial and financial city. The Federal Bank, which controls the mark currency, as well as major domestic and international financial institutions, trading companies, manufacturers, foreign embassies, and various government offices are all located in the city.
