It is also called ISDN, Integrated Digital Network, or Integrated Services Digital Network. Telecommunications networks consist of transmission lines, switches, communication processing devices, etc. Each of these components can be integrated and integrated using digital technology, which results in an economical and highly functional communication network. Such a technologically integrated communication network is called a digital integrated network. On the other hand, a communication network that aims to increase the flexibility of introducing new communication services by processing various communication information such as voice, data, and images in an integrated manner on a single communication network in preparation for the arrival of an advanced information society is called an integrated communication network.

ISDNあるいは総合ディジタル通信網，総合サービスディジタル網とも呼ばれる。電気通信網は伝送路，交換機，通信処理装置などから構成されている。これらの各構成要素はディジタル技術により統合一体化することができ，これにより経済的で高機能な通信網が構成される。このように技術的に一体化された通信網をディジタル統合網という。　一方，高度情報社会の到来に備えて，音声，データ，画像などの各種通信情報を一つの通信網で総合一体的に処理することにより，新しい通信サービス導入に対する融通性を高めようとする通信網を総合通信網という。
