A term used in theater scripts. It refers to the final scene or act where the plot of a play is resolved. During the Edo period, when a Kabuki play was generally composed of two parts, the first (jidaimono) and the second (sewamono), the end of the first part was called o-tsume and the end of the second part was called o-giri (Ogiri), but later it simply came to mean the final act of a play, and the word came to be used outside of Kabuki as well. It has since become an everyday word meaning the end of something, and is used in expressions such as "the trial is nearing its o-tsume."
