...Later, the lanterns were replaced with small Japanese flags, and this was a common sight up until the early Showa period. Along with the candy vendors mentioned above, candy crafts were also popular. A stall was set up by the roadside, and softened white candy was attached to the ends of reed stalks, which were then blown into inflatable candies.
