...The area is made up of a basin formed by the Arakawa River, which flows westward through the center, and surrounding mountain areas. Settlements are distributed along the main tributaries of the Arakawa River, with Shimonoseki at the center of the basin. The main industry is agriculture, but the upper reaches of the Arakawa River in the east form part of the Bandai-Asahi National Park, and tourism development is underway, including ski resorts, centered on the Arakawa Onsen area (Takanosu, Takase, Kira, and Yuzawa hot springs), which has abundant hot spring water. The entire village was devastated by the Uetsu flood in 1967, but the Arakawa River was renovated and the area has since been restored.
