A Jew who developed a messianic movement in Turkey in the mid-17th century. He was the founder of the Sabbatean sect. He was also written as Shabbetai Tzevi. He was born in Izmir to Jewish immigrants from Spain. After studying the Talmud, he became interested in the mysticism of Kabbalah. After 1648, he traveled to Cairo, Istanbul, Jerusalem, and Thessaloniki, preaching religious reform, and in 1665, he proclaimed himself the Messiah in Izmir. His movement, which was linked to Jewish ideas of the chosen people and eschatology, spread widely to Europe, but after he was arrested by the Ottoman authorities, he converted to Islam and took the name Mehmet Efendi.

17世紀中葉のトルコでメシア運動を展開したユダヤ教徒。サバタイ派の始祖。Shabbetai Tzeviとも記される。スペインから移住したユダヤ人の子としてイズミルに生まれる。タルムードを学んだのち，神秘主義カバラに傾倒。1648年以後，カイロ，イスタンブール，エルサレム，テッサロニキを遍歴して宗教改革を説き，65年，イズミルでみずからメシアであることを宣言。彼の運動はユダヤ教徒の選民思想･終末観と結びついて，広くヨーロッパにまで拡大したが，彼はオスマン帝国当局により逮捕されたのち，イスラムに改宗しメフメト･エフェンディMehmet Efendiを名のった。
