1626‐76 A Jew who developed a messianic movement in Turkey in the mid-17th century. He was the founder of the Sabbatean sect. He was also written as Shabbetai Tzevi. He was born in Izmir to Jewish immigrants from Spain. After studying the Talmud, he became interested in the mysticism of Kabbalah. After 1648, he traveled to Cairo, Istanbul, Jerusalem, and Thessaloniki, preaching religious reform, and in 1665, he proclaimed himself the Messiah in Izmir. His movement, which was linked to Jewish ideas of the chosen people and eschatology, spread widely to Europe, but after he was arrested by the Ottoman authorities, he converted to Islam and took the name Mehmet Efendi.
