Doll Pass - Ningyo Touge

Japanese:
Doll Pass - Ningyo Touge

A pass on the border between Misasa Town, Tohaku District, Tottori Prefecture and Kagamino Town, Tomata District, Okayama Prefecture. It is 739 meters above sea level. It is known as the first sedimentary uranium deposit in Japan. The Ningyo Pass Environmental Technology Center of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency is located in Kagamino Town. The deposit is contained in a layer of gravel from the Neogene period that accumulated in an eroded depression in the granitic mountain range, and is covered by volcanic rocks. The estimated reserves are about 3.74 million tons, the second largest in Japan after the Tono Mine. In 1964 (Showa 39), test refining of raw ore began, and in 1982, full operation of a uranium enrichment pilot plant using a centrifuge method began, making it a technology development center for the refining, conversion, and enrichment divisions of Japan's nuclear fuel cycle. The uranium enrichment plant ceased operation in 2001 (Heisei 13). To the west of the pass, at an altitude of 610 meters below the old pass, National Route 179 crosses through the Ningyo Tunnel.

There is also a legend that there is a giant spider at the pass that attacks people trying to cross the mountain, and that a man lured the spider away with a straw doll and then drove it away.
