Chavez, CE

Even after the region was annexed by the United States, poor farmers and city dwellers from Mexico came to the area in search of economic opportunities. Against the backdrop of this history and the cultural revitalization movement of various ethnic groups since the 1960s, the new Chicano movement, led by California's Cesar Estrada Chavez, took pride in their cultural heritage and sought to confront the white system through radical political action, based on the recognition that they had been conquered and stripped of their land, history, and culture by white people. Here, the term Chicano, which had a derogatory meaning, is elevated to represent the "soul" of Mexican Americans.
