...A horticultural plant (illustration) created by crossbreeding closely related Dianthus species (such as the Dianthus caryophyllus) with Dianthus caryophyllus L., a species of the Caryophyllaceae native to southern Europe. The current horticultural species, D. caryophyllus L., was first cultivated in ancient Greece, and in the 17th century, it was bred in France and England, and in the 19th century, many varieties were developed through crossbreeding with other species.
