Arnold Böcklin

Arnold Böcklin

Swiss painter. Born in Basel on October 16th, he studied under J. W. Schirmer at the Düsseldorf School of Fine Arts in 1845. He then studied under the landscape painter Alexandre Calame (1810-64) in Antwerp, Brussels, and Geneva. He travelled around the country after a trip to Paris in 1848, and stayed in Rome from 1850 to 1857. There he produced works based on landscapes and mythology. At an exhibition held in Munich in 1859, his work "Bread in the Reeds" (Neue Pinakothek, Munich) caused controversy. He taught at the Weimar School of Fine Arts from 1860 to 1862, but returned to Italy. He spent the rest of his life in Florence, except for two or three years each in Basel, Munich, and Zurich, and died on January 16th, 1901, in Fiesole, near the city. He started out with landscape painting, then moved to a style of painting that was based on symbols and fantasy derived from mythology, pioneering a world that was the polar opposite of Impressionism. In addition to "Island of the Dead" (1880, Basel Art Museum), he also produced many self-portraits, and his masterpiece "Self-Portrait with Death" (Berlin, National Gallery) is one of his representative works in this field.
