Sanetaka's Chronicle

The diary of Sanjonishi Sanetaka, Minister of the Interior. Although some parts are missing, the original handwritten version remains, covering the period from 1474 (Bunmei 6) to 1536 (Tenbun 5). The Sanjonishi family was a branch of the Ogimachi Sanjo family, and was of mid-ranking rank as a nobleman, but Sanetaka was well-versed in Japanese and Chinese studies, and was known as a poet and calligrapher. He was highly trusted by the emperor and the shogun, and had connections with local samurai whose power was growing at the time. The diary is a valuable historical document, as it contains many articles that provide information on the political and social situation after the Onin War (1467-77) and the economic state of the Sanjonishi family. It is also valuable in that it contains letters from over 300 people in his circle of acquaintances, including nobles, samurai, renga poets, and other entertainers, as it was written using the backstory of letters from many people. The handwritten version is on display at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo, and a typeset version based on it has been published by the Zoku Gunsho Ruiju Kanseikai.

内大臣三条西(さんじょうにし)実隆の日記。1474年（文明6）より1536年（天文5）に至るまで、途中一部欠失はあるものの自筆の原本が残っている。三条西家は正親町(おおぎまち)三条家の庶流で、公家(くげ)としては中の上といったランクであったが、実隆は学識豊かで和漢の学に通じ、歌人、能書家としても知られていた。天皇や将軍の信任が厚く、当時勢力を伸長してきた地方武士らとも交流があった。日記は応仁(おうにん)の乱（1467～77）後の政治・社会情勢、三条西家の経済状態を知りうる記事が多く、貴重な史料であるが、さらに多くの人々からきた手紙の裏を利用して記されているため、公家・武家をはじめ連歌師ら芸能人など、彼の交友範囲にある300余人の手紙を伝えている点でも貴重である。自筆本は東京大学史料編纂(へんさん)所に架蔵されており、それを基にした活字本が続群書類従完成会から刊行されている。
