1906‐71 American female photographer. Born in New York City. She studied photography at the school of Clarence White (1871-1925), who developed the Photo-Secession movement with A. Stieglitz and others, and immediately began freelance photography work after graduating. She was one of the photography staff at the launch of Life in 1936, and her photo of Fort Peck Dam was featured on the cover of the first issue. She later became a leading photojournalist in graphic magazines (graphic journalism), while also writing books with her husband, the writer E.
