American female photographer. Born in New York City. She studied photography at the school of Clarence White (1871-1925), who developed the Photo-Secession movement with A. Stieglitz and others, and immediately began freelance photography work after graduating. She was one of the photography staff at the launch of Life in 1936, and her photo of Fort Peck Dam was featured on the cover of the first issue. She later became a leading photojournalist in graphic magazines (graphic journalism), while also writing books with her husband, the writer E. Caldwell (co-authoring You Have Seen Their Faces (1937) and other works).

アメリカの女流写真家。ニューヨーク市生れ。A.スティーグリッツらとともにフォト・セセッション運動を展開したホワイトClarence White(1871‐1925)の学校で写真を学び,卒業後すぐフリーランスで写真の仕事を始めた。1936年の《ライフ》創刊時の写真スタッフの一人であり,創刊号の表紙は彼女のフォートペックダムを撮った写真でかざられた。その後彼女は第一級のフォトジャーナリストとしてグラフ雑誌(グラフ・ジャーナリズム)を舞台に活躍する一方,夫でもあった作家E.コールドウェルとともに著作活動(共著として《You Have Seen Their Faces》(1937)など)も行っている。
