Japanese: 鱗模様 - うろこもよう

It is a continuous geometric pattern with isosceles triangles as each unit, and these units are connected up, down, left and right. It was probably named after its shape, which resembles fish scales. Other widely seen geometric patterns include sawtooth patterns in which triangular units are arranged in parallel, and staircase patterns in which they are arranged diagonally. Also, scale patterns, in which semicircles are layered in the shape of fish scales, are commonly seen in Greece, Rome and Western Asia. Triangular scale patterns have an ancient origin and are found all over the world. They can also be seen on painted pottery (c. 4000 BC) excavated from the Anau site in Turkestan, and in murals on ancient tombs in Japan.

二等辺三角形を一単位とする幾何学的な連続文様で，この単位を上下左右につないだもの。その形状が魚鱗を思わせるところから名づけられたものであろう。幾何学文様としては，三角形の単位を並列させた鋸歯文，斜めに並べた階段文も広くみられる。また半円形を魚鱗状に重ねる鱗文もギリシア，ローマ，西アジアで多く見られる。三角形の鱗文は，発生も古く，世界各地に分布している。トルキスタン，アナウ遺跡出土の彩陶(前4000ころ)や日本の古墳壁画にもみられる。
