Sanage Kiln - Sanageyo

A famous kiln representing the Heian period. Excavations conducted after the Second World War brought new knowledge about previously unknown pottery from the Nara and Heian periods. The kiln site is widely distributed on the southwest foot of Mt. Sanage in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and extends to Nagoya City, Nisshin City, Togo Town, Miyoshi City, Toyoake City, Kariya City, and Nagakute City. This area was already firing sueki ware during the Kofun period, and in the Nara period it grew into a leading kiln rivaling Suemura Kiln in Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture). In the early Heian period (9th century), they perfected ash-glazed pottery, which is made by molding high-quality grayish-white clay and applying an artificial ash glaze to the surface of the vessel, and suddenly took on the honor of being the best kiln in the world. In addition to the vessel shapes that had been used since the Nara period, the products were diversified by imitating the high-quality celadon and white porcelain imported from China at that time, and were also used by the Imperial Court. This kiln declined in the 12th century, and branched out into the medieval Tokoname kilns, Atsumi kilns, and Seto kilns.

平安時代を代表する名窯。第二次世界大戦後、発掘調査され、それまで明らかでなかった奈良・平安時代の陶器について新しい知見をもたらした。窯址(ようし)は愛知県豊田(とよた)市の猿投山南西麓(ろく)に広く分布し、名古屋市、日進市、東郷町、みよし市、豊明(とよあけ)市、刈谷(かりや)市、長久手(ながくて)市に及んでいる。この地域はすでに古墳時代に須恵器(すえき)を焼いており、奈良時代には河内(かわち)（大阪府）の陶邑(すえむら)窯と対抗する有力窯に成長した。平安前期（9世紀）には灰白色の良質粘土を成形して人為的に灰釉(かいゆう)を器面に施す灰釉陶を完成させて一躍天下第一の窯の栄誉を担った。奈良時代以来の器形に加え、当時中国から輸入された上質の青磁・白磁を模倣して製品は多種多様となり、宮中の用にも供された。この窯は12世紀には衰微して、中世の常滑(とこなめ)窯、渥美(あつみ)窯、瀬戸窯に分派した。
