1868‐1952 Canadian politician. Born in Montreal as the grandson of L. J. Papineau and the son of artist N. Bourassa, he was a representative figure of French Canadian nationalism in Quebec. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1896, but resigned in 1899 in opposition to the Liberal government of W. Laurier's intervention in the Boer War. He published the magazine Duty from 1910 onwards, and his opposition to the establishment of a navy influenced Laurier's defeat in the general election of 1911. He also opposed conscription under the Conservative government of RL Borden, and was consistent in his stance as a French Canadian nationalist.
