Geulincx, Arnold

Geulincx, Arnold
Born January 31, 1624 in Antwerp
Died November 1669. A Dutch Cartesian philosopher known for his Leiden theory of contingency. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Leuven, and later became a professor, but in 1658 he was accused of being a sympathizer of Jansenism and fled to Leiden. Although he was a faithful follower of Descartes, he was deeply interested in ethics and was influenced by Augustine, and his belief in an omnipotent, transcendent God became the source of his contingency philosophy. According to his theory, God is the sole cause of all things, and the author of my thoughts and physical movements is not me but God, and the body is the occasion for thought. He came to a deterministic view that all actions are at the will of God, but he recognized human freedom and avoided attributing sin and error to God, and considered volitional submission to God to be the only virtue. Main works: "Tractatus ethicus primus" (1665), "Ethica" (65), "Physica vera" (88), "Metaphysica vera" (91).

主著"Tractatus ethicus primus" (1665) ,"Ethica" (65) ,"Physica vera" (88) ,"Metaphysica vera" (91) 。
