Luis Vélez de Guevara

Spanish playwright and novelist. After studying at the University of Osuna, he served the Archbishop of Seville, but after the Archbishop's death in 1600, he joined the military and moved around Spain, Algiers, and Italy. After retiring from the military, he wrote in Madrid and frequented the royal court. He wrote 400 plays in his lifetime (80 of which are still extant), covering a wide range of genres, including hagiography, historical dramas, interludes, and sacramental mysticism. His writing style was so similar to that of Lope de Vega that they even had a dispute over authorship, but his play La Vela was praised as superior to Lope's work of the same title.

スペインの劇作家，小説家。オスーナ大学に学んだ後，セビリャの大司教に仕えたが，1600年大司教が死ぬと軍隊に入り，スペイン，アルジェ，イタリアの各地を転々とした。退役後はマドリードで文筆活動を行い，宮廷にも出入りした。生涯に400編(うち80編が現存)の戯曲を書き，そのジャンルは聖人伝，史劇，幕間狂言，聖餐神秘劇など多岐にわたっている。文体がローペ･デ･ベガのそれに酷似しており，彼との間に〈原作者〉の問題もおこるほどであったが，《ラベーラの山家娘》は，同じ題名のローペの作を凌ぐできと評された。
