1579‐1644 Spanish playwright and novelist. After studying at the University of Osuna, he served the Archbishop of Seville, but after the Archbishop's death in 1600, he joined the military and moved around Spain, Algiers, and Italy. After retiring from the military, he wrote in Madrid and frequented the royal court. He wrote 400 plays in his lifetime (80 of which are still extant), covering a wide range of genres, including hagiography, historical dramas, interludes, and sacramental mysticism. His writing style was so similar to that of Lope de Vega that they even had a dispute over authorship, but his play La Vela was praised as superior to Lope's work of the same title.
