A glass and chemical manufacturer of Mitsubishi. It is the industry leader in the fields of flat glass, cathode ray tubes, and automotive glass. In 1907, Toshiya Iwasaki (the younger brother of Koyata Iwasaki, the 4th head of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu) founded Asahi Glass. It was the first company in Japan to successfully industrialize flat glass. In 1944, it was merged with Nippon Kasei Kogyo (now Mitsubishi Chemical) and renamed Mitsubishi Kasei Kogyo. In 1950, the company was split into three parts and relaunched as Asahi Glass. It also operates in the high-tech sectors of chemicals, fine ceramics, and electronics. It is also active in overseas production and acquisition of overseas companies. LCD and PDP substrates are doing well due to the expansion of the market for flat-screen TVs. Head office in Tokyo, factories in Amagasaki, Kitakyushu, Yokohama, and others. Capital in 2011 was 90.8 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1.2146 trillion yen.
