Julian Bream

British guitar and lute player. While studying at the Royal College of Music in London, he also studied guitar privately and made his debut in London in 1950. In 1959 he formed the Julian Bream Consort, and in 1971 he founded the Semley Festival (Wiltshire), focusing on chamber music for guitar and lute. He was extremely influential in re-evaluating the classical guitar and in researching and introducing lute music of the 16th and 17th centuries, and his elegant and taut performances have captivated many audiences.

イギリスのギターおよびリュート奏者。ロンドンのローヤル音楽カレッジに学ぶかたわら，個人的にギターを習得し，1950年ロンドンでデビュー。59年〈ジュリアン･ブリーム･コンソート〉を結成し，71年ギターやリュートなどによる室内楽を中心とした〈セムリー音楽祭〉(ウィルトシャー)を設立。クラシック･ギターを再評価するとともに，16,17世紀のリュート音楽を研究および紹介したという点で非常に大きな影響力をもち，また彼の華麗で張りのある演奏は多くの人々を魅了した。
