Lethe - Leth (English spelling)

A deity in Greek mythology, Lethe means "forgetfulness." According to Hesiod, she is the daughter of Eris, the goddess of strife, and the sister of Ponos (toil), Make (war), Limos (hunger), and Ate (ruin). However, as a god, she has no activities. Lethe usually refers to a field, spring, or river in the underworld, and is also said to be a tributary of the River Styx (the equivalent of the Japanese River Sanzu). It was believed that the souls of the dead who descended to the underworld could forget about their life by drinking the waters of Lethe.

ギリシア神話の神格で、「忘却」を意味する。ヘシオドスによれば、争いの女神エリスの娘で、ポノス（労苦）、マケ（戦い）、リモス（飢え）、アテ（破滅）らの姉妹とされる。しかし、神としてはなんら活動することがない。レテは普通冥界(めいかい)にある野原、あるいは泉、川のことをさし、またスティクス川（日本の三途(さんず)の川にあたる）の支流ともされる。地下に降りた死者の魂は、レテの水を飲んで生前のことを忘れると信じられていた。
