An ancient Indian dynasty (c. 185-c. 80 BC). The first king, Pushyamitra, was a military commander of the Mauryan Empire. He killed his master and seized the kingship around 185 BC, and ruled over a fairly large territory in northern India. He respected the religion and culture of the Brahmins by performing the Vedic ritual (ancient Indian mythological ritual), Ashvamedha (horse-shrine festival). According to Buddhist legend, he persecuted Buddhists, but Buddhist architecture flourished in his territory, as can be seen in the ruins of Bharkhut. However, at that time, new powers arose in the south and foreign tribes invaded from the northwest, so this dynasty was not as powerful as the Mauryan Empire, and was destroyed by his minister Vasudeva around 80 BC, and replaced by the Kanba dynasty.
