Gradation - Kaichou

The number of shades of color or brightness. It is one of the factors that determine the image quality of displays and printers, and is used as a unit of color and brightness expression. The more shades there are, the smoother the gradation of color and brightness changes can be expressed, resulting in more natural drawings. The shades are expressed numerically, such as 2, 16, or 256 shades. In a two-tone black and white image, shades are expressed in two levels, white and black. In a color image, it indicates the accuracy of the gradation of one of the three primary colors of light, RGB. For example, if each of the three primary colors has 16 shades, the number of colors that can be expressed is 16 to the power of 3, or 4,096 colors, and if there are 256 shades, the number is 256 to the power of 3, or approximately 16.77 million colors.
