Cartier (English spelling) Cartier, George-Étienne
Born: September 6, 1814, Saint-Anne, Lower Canada
[Died] May 20, 1873. London. Canadian politician. Became a lawyer in 1835, fought under L. Papineau during the reform movement that arose in Lower Canada in 1837, but was defeated and fled to America. Returned to the United States in 1838 after receiving an amnesty. In 1853, he became legal counsel for the Grand Trunk Railway Company. He entered politics when he was elected to the House of Commons of the United Provinces of Canada in 1848, and in 1858 became a leader of the conservative faction in French Canada. As a result, he formed a Conservative government in cooperation with J. A. MacDonald, who represented the conservative faction in British Canada in the United Provinces of Canada, and was in charge of Canadian politics during the important period leading up to Confederation, although there were some interruptions. He participated in the Charlottetown Conference and the Quebec Conference in 1864, and overcame opposition to get French Canadians to join Confederation. When the Dominion of Canada was established in 1867, he joined the cabinet as Minister of Defence. He was very keen to build the Canadian Pacific Railway, but died in England, where he was recuperating, without seeing it come to fruition.
