Saturnus - Sāturnus

Saturnus - Sāturnus

In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of agricultural fertility. His name is thought to be of Etruscan origin, and he is identified with Cronus in Greek mythology, but this god does not share the cruelty of Cronus. According to the poet Virgil, after being driven from the throne of Olympus by Zeus, Saturn came to Italy as Saturn and built the city of Saturnia on the Capitoline Hill. He then married Opus (or Lua), the goddess of the fields, and their son Pyx became the ancestor of the Roman royal family. Saturn is also said to have introduced agricultural techniques to Italy and promoted civilization, and his reign is considered the Golden Age of Italy. His temple was on the Capitoline Hill, and in December the Saturnalia festival, which is thought to be one of the origins of Christmas, was held there.
