Japanese: サトウヤシ - さとうやし（英語表記）sugar palm

A tall tree of the palm family, famous as a sugar palm. The trunk is 15-30 m tall, 40-65 cm in diameter, black, and has a very rough surface. The leaves are pinnately lobed and 6-12 m long, with slender pinnae with truncate teeth at the tips and gray-white undersides. The spikes are 1-3 m long and the flowers are monoecious. The fruit is a drupe, oblate, 3-5 cm long, yellowish brown when ripe, containing 2-3 seeds. It is distributed from India to Malaysia and is widely cultivated in tropical Asia. The genus name Arenga is an old local name for the Malay Peninsula.
