German soprano. Born near Dresden, she studied singing and piano in Dresden. She made her debut at the Dresden State Opera in 1925. She subsequently performed mainly at the Berlin State Opera, and also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera from 1949 to 1951. Her virtuoso singing of Mozart and R. Strauss earned her international fame as one of Germany's leading coloratura sopranos. She left the opera stage in 1955 and worked as a lieder singer before retiring in 1968. In 1959, she became professor at the Hamburg Higher School of Music. Her students included the famous soprano R. Streich (1920-1987). She came to Japan in 1953. ドイツのソプラノ歌手。ドレスデン近郊に生まれ,ドレスデンで声楽とピアノを学ぶ。1925年ドレスデン国立歌劇場でデビュー。以後ベルリン国立歌劇場を中心に活躍し,1949年−1951年にはメトロポリタン歌劇場にも出演。モーツァルトやR.シュトラウス作品での名唱で,ドイツを代表するコロラトゥーラ・ソプラノ(コロラトゥーラ)歌手として国際的な名声を得た。1955年にオペラの舞台を去り,リート歌手として活躍後1968年に引退。1959年ハンブルク高等音楽学校教授。教え子に名ソプラノ歌手R.シュトライヒ〔1920-1987〕など。1953年に来日。
