Cross-country race

Cross-country race
Also called a cross-country race. A long-distance race that uses natural terrain such as fields, grasslands, hills, and forests and chooses a course with variety. It is different from track races held at stadiums, marathons mainly on roads, and relay races. It is said to have developed from the British children's game "paper-chase," in which several children become rabbits and run away scattering pieces of paper, while many other children become hounds and chase them. The first cross-country race was organized in 1867, when the Thames Boat Club in London adopted it as a winter training for the legs and hips.
