Previously, the Dietitian Law defined the term as "a registered dietitian (among dietitians) who is qualified to perform complex or difficult tasks," but the Dietitian Law was revised in June 2001 to define it as "a person who, with the approval of the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, uses the title of registered dietitian and engages in the business of providing nutritional guidance necessary for the medical treatment of injured or sick people, nutritional guidance for the maintenance and promotion of health which requires highly specialized knowledge and techniques depending on the individual's physical condition and nutritional state, etc., and school meal management which requires special consideration depending on the physical condition, nutritional state, and usage situation of the users at facilities that provide meals to a large number of people on a continuous basis, as well as the provision of guidance necessary for nutritional improvement to such facilities." 従来,栄養士法に「(栄養士の中で)複雑又は困難なものを行う適格性を有するものとして登録された栄養士をいう」とされていたが,平成13年6月に改正された栄養士法では,「厚生労働大臣の認可を受けて,管理栄養士の名称を用いて,傷病者に対する療養のために必要な栄養の指導,個人の身体状況,栄養状態などに応じた高度の専門的知識および技術を要する健康の保持増進のための栄養指導並びに特定多数人に対して継続的に食事を提供する施設における利用者の身体の状況,栄養状態,利用の状況等に応じた特別の配慮を必要とする給食管理及びこれらの施設に対する栄養改善上必要な指導を行うことを業とする者をいう」と定義された.
