Takeki Owada
Year of death: October 1, 1910 (Meiji 43)
Year of birth: April 29, 1857 (May 22, 1857)
A Meiji-era poet, tanka writer, and Japanese literature scholar. His father was Mizugumo and his mother was Eiko. He was born in Uwajima, Iyo (Ehime Prefecture). After attending a domain school, he graduated from Hiroshima Foreign Language School. He moved to Tokyo in 1880 (Meiji 13) and studied Japanese literature almost entirely on his own. He served as a lecturer in the classical studies course at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University and a professor at the Higher Normal School. He made his name as a writer with his anthology of poems, "Poet's Spring" (1887), and published many anthologies of songs, including "Railway Songs" (1900). He also wrote "History of Meiji Literature" (1894), in which he included a section on English linguistics, listing the titles of English books that were read by those studying English in the early Meiji period, and which remains interesting even from today's perspective. His other works include "History of Great Japanese Literature" (1899) and "Owada Takeki Poetry Collection" (1912).
