1675‐1757 Italian female painter. Born in Venice, she first trained as a lacemaker and then as a miniature painter. She then turned to pastel painting, a new technique that was becoming popular along with the Rococo taste for lightness and refinement, and she achieved international success by painting portraits of Venetian nobility and wealthy travelers from all over Europe. Many of these portraits are busts or heads that take advantage of the characteristics of pastel to capture a fleeting expression. She traveled to Paris in 1721 and Vienna in 1730, where she was enthusiastically welcomed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
