A village in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 5,031 (1995). Located in the middle of the Echigo Plain, on the west bank of the Nakanokuchi River, a branch of the Shinano River. Made of alluvial land, the village has developed on a natural levee. The central area, Amihachi, is a key transportation hub along the Nakanokuchi River, along with Shirane City on the opposite bank, and Shirane Station on the Niigata Kotsu Line, which leads to Niigata City, is also located within the village. The low marshes in the west were rezoned after World War II as the first prefectural farmland development project, and were converted into dry rice fields through underdrainage. Located in a typical single-crop rice paddy area, the average cultivated land area per household is the largest in the prefecture, making the area a pioneer in large-scale mechanized agriculture.
