...A photographic method that uses silver iodide collodion emulsion. Also called "shitsuban," collodion (nitrocellulose dissolved in ether) is used as the emulsion binder, and silver iodide crystallites are dispersed in it to create collodion photographic emulsion. This emulsion is applied to a glass plate, and the plate is not allowed to dry after dripping off (hence the name wet plate), and then the plate is mounted in a camera to take a photograph. For this reason, wet plate photography requires the photographer to prepare the photosensitive material by mixing the collodion emulsion just before use. After the photograph is taken, the wet plate is developed using a solution of ferrous sulfate or similar as a developer. *Some of the terminology that mentions "collodion" is listed below.
