In Japan, it refers to European wooden shoes. They are made by hollowing out a block of living, hard, water-resistant wood such as willow, beech, or walnut that has been thoroughly dried. They have been used since ancient times, but are still worn today by farmers in the Brittany region of France and the Netherlands, and are the same style for both men and women. The word originates from the Arabic word zaboto. French wooden shoes were originally called sabots, and Dutch wooden shoes were called klomps. Thick wooden soles with rough leather on the upper are also called sabots. Clogs are thought to be one of the prototypes of shoes, but their origin is unclear. Similar shoes can also be found in Japan and Korea. [Tanaka Toshiko] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
