Sugar Tax Act

The American Tariff Act was an act of parliament enacted in 1764 with the primary objective of taxing the colonies. Its official name is the American Tariff Act. It is also known as the Sugar Act. It imposed high tariffs on foreign products, primarily sugar, to cover the costs of stationing British troops in the North American colonies. Along with the Stamp Act, it was strongly opposed by North American colonists and was one of the factors that contributed to the American Revolution. 1764年英国で制定された植民地課税を主目的とする議会法で，正称はアメリカ関税法。砂糖条令とも。北米植民地における英軍駐屯軍費のため砂糖を主とする外国産品に高関税を課した。印紙税法とともに北米植民地人の強い反対にあい，アメリカ独立革命の一因となった。
