The American Tariff Act was an act of parliament enacted in 1764 with the primary objective of taxing the colonies. Its official name is the American Tariff Act. It is also known as the Sugar Act. It imposed high tariffs on foreign products, primarily sugar, to cover the costs of stationing British troops in the North American colonies. Along with the Stamp Act, it was strongly opposed by North American colonists and was one of the factors that contributed to the American Revolution.
