Also known as kansho (sugar cane; conventional reading of kansha) (illustration). A large perennial grass of the Poaceae family that is important as a sugar crop. The stem (illustration) is cylindrical and upright, with many nodes, 2-4 m in height, and the thicker ones can reach a diameter of 4 cm or more, and the outer skin is covered with a waxy substance. The leaves are alternate at each node, and the leaf sheaths envelop the stem, with leaf blades 0.5-1 m long and 1.5-5 cm wide. When mature, a large panicle measuring 50-60 cm long is produced at the apex of the stem. Each ear has 24,000-30,000 spikelets, but is generally self-sterile.
