Striped maple - Striped maple

Japanese: ウリハダカエデ - うりはだかえで
Striped maple - Striped maple

A deciduous medium to tall tree in the maple family (APG classification: Sapindaceae). The bark is green with black spots, resembling the skin of a melon (Cucurbita orientalis). The leaves are opposite, with petioles 3-7 cm long and blades 10-15 cm long and 8-12 cm wide, shallowly 3-lobed, with brown soft hairs along the veins on the underside and fine serrated edges. The winter buds have two pairs of scales. Dioecious. The flowers are pale green-yellow small flowers, about 15 of which grow in a raceme that opens in April and May. They have 5 petals, 5 sepals, and 8 stamens. The fruit has two wings and ripens in autumn. The leaves turn red or yellow in autumn. They are widely distributed in the temperate to subtropical mountainous areas of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. There are more than a dozen closely related species, such as Korean maple and A. capillipes Maxim., from Japan to the Himalayan region, and one species on the east coast of North America. The Korean maple has hairless leaves on the underside and web-like membranes next to the veins, and is distributed in Honshu and Shikoku west of Fukushima Prefecture.
