Sierra Madre (mountain range)

Japanese: シエラ･マドレ[山脈]（英語表記）Sierra Madre

A large mountain range stretching from northwest to southeast in Mexico. It is about 2,400 km long and reaches an elevation of more than 3,000 m. It is a folded mountain range formed by intense mountain-building activity in the Tertiary Period, and consists of three mountain ranges, East, West, and South. The Sierra Madre Occidental is an extension of the Sierra Nevada in the United States, and runs southeast along the Pacific coast, while the Sierra Madre Oriental is connected to the Rocky Mountains and runs south along the Atlantic coast. The East and West Sierras increase in height as they head south, and when they join together they become the Sierra Madre Southern, which runs west and crosses the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

メキシコの北西から南東に連なる大山脈。長さは約2400kmに及び，標高は3000m以上に達する。第三紀の激しい造山運動によってつくられた褶曲山脈で，東･西･南の三つの山脈よりなる。西シエラ･マドレは，アメリカ合衆国のシエラ･ネバダの延長上にあって，太平洋岸を南東に連なり，東シエラ･マドレは，ロッキー山脈から連なって，大西洋岸を南下している。東･西のシエラ･マドレは，南に向かうにつれてその高度を増し，合して南シエラ･マドレとなって西に走り，テワンテペク地峡を越えている。
