Year of death: November 16, 1508 (December 8, 1508) Year of birth: 1437 A military commander in the Muromachi period. Son of Mochitane. Sahyoe no sa and Sahyoe no kami. In 1452, Yoshitake, head of the Shiba family, died without an heir, so Yoshitoshi was adopted and took over as the guardian of the three provinces of Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), Owari (Aichi Prefecture), and Totomi (Shizuoka Prefecture). He was at odds with Kai Tsuneharu, a senior retainer of the Shiba family, and in 1456, he appealed to the shogunate about Tsuneharu's tyranny, but was defeated. The conflict between the two factions, which divided the Shiba family's vassals, escalated to a battle that extended over the entire Echizen province in 1458. The following year, when he was ordered to march to the Kanto region by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, Yoshitoshi left Kyoto and attacked the Kai forces in Tsuruga, Echizen, but was defeated. Furthermore, he was expelled from his position as head of the family by the shogunate, so he went down to Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture) to seek refuge with the Ouchi clan. His son Matsuomaru (Yoshiyoshi), who succeeded him, was also dismissed in 1461, and Yoshimasa was welcomed by the Shibukawa clan. However, thanks to the efforts of Yoshimasa's favorites, such as Sadachika Ise, Yoshimasa's son, Yoshitane, Yoshimasa succeeded in regaining the family headship in July 1466. However, when Sadachika and others were overthrown in September, the family headship was transferred back to Yoshimasa. When the Onin War began, he joined the Eastern Army led by Hosokawa Katsumoto, and in May 1467, he went to Echizen and put pressure on Yoshimasa's side. The following year, Asakura Takakage, who had been in the Western Army led by Yamana Sozen under Yoshimasa, switched sides to the Eastern Army, but Yoshimasa refused to cooperate with Takakage and continued to resist with the Ninomiya clan in Ono County, his ancestors' base. However, in 1475, he left Tsuchihashi Castle (Ono City) and was sent to Kyoto by the Asakura clan. Afterwards, his son Yoshiyoshi, supported by the Kai and Ninomiya clans, attempted to invade Echizen, but failed, and in the 15th year of the same year, he descended to Owari. Seven of his renga poems are included in the Shinsen G7EDF Kunamishu. (Akira Kawamura) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
