Humpbacked fly - Flea fly (English spelling)

Japanese: ノミバエ(蚤蠅) - ノミバエ（英語表記）humpbacked fly

A general term for insects belonging to the Diptera family Phoridae. The name comes from the fact that they rarely fly and run around very actively, which is reminiscent of a flea. They belong to the Aperiosteal group of the Cyclorrhaphyta suborder and are closely related to hoverflies (Family: Phoridae). There are 200 genera and 2,400 species recorded worldwide, but they have hardly been studied in Japan, with only about 20 species recorded. Most species are small, with body lengths of 1 to 5 mm, no transverse veins in the wings, thick basal half of the anterior vein and radial veins, and other degenerate veins.

双翅目ノミバエ科Phoridaeに属する昆虫の総称。ほとんど飛翔（ひしよう）せず，非常に活発に走る姿が，ノミを連想させることから由来した名である。系統的には，環縫亜目無額囊群に属し，ハナアブ(ショクガバエ科)と近縁である。世界で200属，2400種の記録があるが，日本ではほとんど研究されておらず，わずか二十数種が記録されているにすぎない。小型種が多く，体長1～5mm，翅脈に横脈がなく，前縁脈の基半部と径脈が太く，他は退化している。
