A herbaceous shrub of the Piperaceae family. It is found in the Pacific islands. The dried roots are crushed on stones, mixed with water, and the extract is used to make the anesthetic drink kava, which numbs the mouth and has a sedative effect. In Oceania, kava was once consumed during traditional ceremonies and events, but is now consumed on a daily basis. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
