The name of a cape at the southern tip of the Attica Peninsula in Greece. The plateau at the tip, surrounded on three sides by sheer cliffs rising about 60 meters above sea level, had been revered as a sacred place for sailors since the time of Homer, and a temple to the sea god Poseidon was built on it in the 6th century BC. This older temple was destroyed during the Persian invasion in 480 BC, and a temple to the same god was built on the same foundations in the mid-5th century BC. Today, only about ten columns and parts of the superstructure remain of this marble Doric temple. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
