Satsumon pottery

Japanese:
Satsumon pottery
Iron Age pottery found in Hokkaido and the northern Tohoku region. It is named after the markings on the entire surface of the pottery. It is believed to have originated in the 8th to 9th century, when Hajiki pottery, brought by the Yamato Imperial Court during its northern advance in the Nara and Heian periods, came into contact with the indigenous Post-Jomon pottery. There are many relatively small jars, bowls, and high-footed pottery, and the patterns are mainly markings, parallel lines drawn with a sharp spatula, and cross lines, with some pasted-on patterns. The chronology is currently insufficient, and the final date is said to be from the Kamakura to Edo periods, but it is probably appropriate to consider it to be from the Kamakura period. Artifacts found include stone tools, bone and horn tools, metal tools, and spindle wheels, and the pit dwellings have hearths.
