A culture associated with Satsumon pottery. Distributed in Hokkaido and the northern Tohoku region, it is believed to have lasted from around the 8th century until the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, with some researchers saying it continued into the early modern period. It is believed that the post-Jomon culture of Hokkaido came into contact with a culture associated with Haji pottery that migrated north from Honshu, and is also considered to be a culture that precedes the Ainu culture. Fishing is thought to have been the main occupation, but the square pit dwellings had hearths, and excavations of millet, barnyard millet, and buckwheat indicate that small-scale cultivation was also carried out.
