Heretical sect - Jashumon

Kitahara Hakushu's first collection of poems. Published by Eifusha in March 1909 (Meiji 42). It consists of 119 poems in six chapters: "Demonic Sleep, Vermilion Accompaniment, External Light and Impressions, Amakusa Song, Blue Flowers, Aged Wine." The book is structured with the most recent works from 1908 as the opening chapter, and older poems written in 1906 at the end. In the "Examples" it states, "My symbolic poetry is centered on the harmony of emotions and the impressions of the senses," and "My hallucinations have their roots in the sensuality that I truly feel myself," revealing the essence of his symbolic technique. The opening poem, "Heretical Sect Secret Song," begins with, "I think of the heretical sects of the last days, and the magic of Christianity. / I think of the Kahitan of the Black Ships, the mysterious country of the Red Hair, / The red glass, the sharp-smelling aroma, / The Sanmejima silk of the Southern Barbarians, and the hata, araki, and chinta sake." The foreign words related to the culture and things that were brought over from the Southern Barbarians bring to light a fascinating world. "Amakusa Gakka" and "Aoki Hana" are commemorative works of the Amakusa trip (1907) and the Nanki trip (1906) made by members of the Shinshisha Society. Inspired by the symbolic poetry of Baudelaire and Verlaine, who he became familiar with through Ueda Bin's translation of "Umichoon," as well as the poetry of Kambara Ariake and Susukida Kyukin, he created his own symbolic technique, known as the "Jashumon Shinpa-tai." The cover design and illustrations of the first edition by Ishii Hakutei are "mysterious and a kind of solemn strangeness" ("Sanban Reigen"), and they beautifully harmonize with the world of "Jashumon."

北原白秋の第一詩集。1909年(明治42)3月易風社刊。「魔睡、朱の伴奏、外光と印象、天草(あまくさ)雅歌、青き花、古酒」の6章、119編からなる。1908年の最新作を冒頭の章とし、1906年の作の古い詩編を末尾に置く構成。「例言」には「予が象徴詩は情緒の諧楽(かいらく)と感覚の印象とを主とす」「予が幻覚には自ら真に感じたる官能の根柢(こんてい)あり」と象徴的手法の内実を示している。「われは思ふ、末世(まつせ)の邪宗(じゃしゅう)、切支丹(きりしたん)でうすの魔法(まはふ)。/黒船(くろふね)の加比丹(かひたん)を、紅毛(こうまう)の不可思議国(ふかしぎこく)を、/色赤(いろあか)きびいどろを、匂鋭(にほひと)きあんじやべいいる、/南蛮(なんばん)の桟留縞(さんとめじま)を、はた、阿剌吉(あらき)、珍酡(ちんた)の酒を。」と始まる冒頭詩「邪宗門秘曲」は、南蛮渡来の文化、事物にかかわる外来語の名称が幻惑的な世界を浮かび上がらせる。「天草雅歌」と「青き花」は新詩社同人によって行われた天草旅行(1907年)と南紀旅行(1906年)の記念作である。上田敏(びん)訳『海潮音』により親しんだボードレール、ベルレーヌの象徴詩や蒲原有明(かんばらありあけ)、薄田泣菫(すすきだきゅうきん)の詩に刺激を受けながら、〈邪宗門新派体〉という独自の象徴的手法を生み出した。初版の石井柏亭(はくてい)の装幀(そうてい)、挿画は「不可思議にして一種荘厳なる怪しさ」(「三版例言」)により『邪宗門』の世界とみごとに交響している。
