Volume 8 of the Shikido Daikyo (completed in 1678) states that "The art of sekkyo began with a man named Osaka Yoshiro," and it is said that Yoshiro (Sekkyo Yoshiro), who was from Ise, performed in the grounds of Ikuta Shrine around the Kan'ei period (1624-44), and that Sekkyo Shichitayu also performed around the Meireki and Kanbun periods (1655-73). There is a theory that this Shichitayu is the predecessor of Sado Shichitayu of Edo.
