...In the Nara period, on the first day of the New Year, a broom made from straw was swept out of the silkworm room with a Rat Day pine tree to pray for a good harvest. This broom was called the Tamahouki (tama-houki) and was sung about in the Manyoshu, and is also preserved as a treasure in the Shosoin Repository. The first sweeping of the New Year was also performed as one of the first tasks of the New Year, and in New Year's language, the broom is called Onamono (a New Year's item). Brooms are often used in spells for safe childbirth, and in various places, brooms are enshrined in a corner of the birth room, the belly of a pregnant woman is stroked with a broom, or a broom is placed upside down at the feet. ...
