...This type of lamp had the oil pan placed higher than the wick to make the light brighter and keep it burning for a long time. The next revolutionary improvement was the Quinquet lamp (also called the Kenquet lamp), invented by French pharmacist Antoine Quinquet (1745-1803), which had a glass chimney to protect the flame from the wind and prevent the light from being blocked. The Argand lamp (a type in which the oil pan was directly connected to the cylindrical wick) invented by Swiss chemist Aimé Argand (1755-1803) was the final basic type of oil lamp, and it was American B. Silliman who created it. By using oil instead of animal or vegetable oil, the wick could automatically absorb the oil and create a bright light source, so Silliman's oil lamp eliminated the traditional oil lamp and spread almost throughout the world by the 1870s and 1880s.
