Archaic art - Archaic art
The word archaic comes from the Greek word archaios (old, original). It is sometimes used as a general term for ancient art, but in Greek art in particular, the Archaic period is from the 6th century BC to around 480 BC, after the Geometric style, and has a stiff yet simple and powerful style. It is characterized by a facial expression called the Archaic smile, because the lips turn slightly up at both ends, which is thought to have been devised to express the liveliness of the figures, making them look like they are smiling.
