In 1392, Yi Seong-gye (Taejo) established a new dynasty and in 1394 established the capital at Hanyangbu. The fortress, also called Hanseong (Seoul), was surrounded by stone walls along the ridge of Seoul's four mountains, with the South Gate, the East Gate and six other small gates. Within the fortress, palaces such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, built by Taejo, Deoksugung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace and Gyeonghuigung Palace were built one after another. However, most of the palaces were burned down during the Imjin-Jeongyu War, and the current palaces were rebuilt afterwards. …
