Five-ring tower - Gorinto

Japanese:
Five-ring tower - Gorinto

A tower consisting of five parts modelled on the five elements. It is also called a Gorin Sotoba (Stupa). The five elements are earth, water, fire, wind and space, which are the components of matter, and the rings signify the endowment of all virtues. Thus, Gorin is a collective term for the Earth Ring, Water Ring, Fire Ring, Wind Ring and Sky Ring. They are made in the shapes of a square, circle, triangle, crescent moon and jewel, respectively, and in Japan they have been used as memorial towers for the dead or as grave markers since around the middle of the Heian period. They are generally made of stone, but they can also be made of wood, metal or mud. Incidentally, the five human bodies are made up of five wheels (five wheels and five bodies), and they are considered to be equal to Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana), so practitioners of esoteric Buddhism practice a form of meditation called Gorin Jōshinkan (a type of meditation).
